![]() ![]() This is the kind of show that seems simple on the surface but is actually quite complicated. ![]() Even the way the text pop in with ALL CAPS from time to time screams overacting. ![]() Also, I worry that this is the kind of show that can easily slip over into melodrama. On the other hand, despite this play’s high pedigree (Pulitzer Prize for Drama), it doesn’t appeal to me.ĭespite the strong roles, they feel somewhat cliché to me. Finding plays with strong female roles despite the propensity of females to populate the ranks of amateur theater groups is difficult. It has three strong female roles of strongly different types-the overbearing mother, the rebellious daughter, and the smart daughter. So, I decided to give this a read to see if it is a show I would be interested in doing with my group. Though my memories of that performance are vague, as I recall, it was done by a group of students. I remember seeing this play performed when I was in middle school back in the early eighties. As a director for a high school theater group, I am often reading plays, trying to find choices that would be appropriate. ![]()
